I decided to try Gov-Auctions when I was purchasing a new vehicle. I saw the site and immediately wondered, “Is Gov Auctions a scam or is it legit?” The only way for me to find out was to use the site, then tell you about my experience. I’m going to try to make my Gov Auctions review as unbiased as possible to help you know exactly what to think about the site.
When my teenage daughter wrecked her car, our family was in a bit of a bind. We needed to buy a new vehicle, but we didn’t want to spend too much money. If we purchased a cheap car, we’d save a lot of money but wouldn’t know if we could rely on our vehicle. If we leased or purchased a new car, we’d have a reliable ride but have to pay much more than we could afford.
A friend pointed me to government auctions and said it was legit. Since he’d had a good experience there, I thought I’d give it a try in trying to find my family’s new car. I did end up buying a vehicle through the site, and I’m very happy with it, but I’ll explain that later in my review.
What Is Gov-Auctions?
Gov Auctions is a site that helps people find auctions for government pre-owned and seized cars, trucks and SUVs. Thousands of vehicles are seized every month by police departments and government agencies like the IRS, DEA and FBI. These cars are then auctioned off to the public at a discounted rate. Certain laws require these vehicles to be listed and sold at up to 95% off their original value.
Basically, Government Auctions helps people find these auctions and then save money when they buy these seized or pre-owned cars. There are listings on the site for auctions that are not searchable elsewhere on the internet, and Gov Auctions guarantees listings in every state. I had no problem choosing to buy a pre-owned car, so I gave the site a try.
Are The Cars Reliable?
My biggest concern in buying a car is whether or not the vehicle is reliable. I’ve purchased cars in the past that died after only a few months of driving. I didn’t want that to happen again, so I made sure to research the vehicles on Gov Auctions to see if they were reliable. I found that government pre-owned and surplus vehicles are well-maintained and usually only between 2 and 3 years old. That means the cars are still going to be in good shape.
When I purchased my car through Gov Auctions, I was amazed at how clean and well-maintained it was. I bought a Toyota Camry with only 17,000 miles on it for around $5,000—a steal at that price! The car didn’t smell like cigarettes (something I’ve had problems with before when buying used cars) and ran smoothly. Even though the car was 3 years old, it drove like it was brand new!
Based on my experience, I’d say that the cars on Gov Auctions are very reliable.
Is It Expensive?
Another important factor for me in purchasing a car is cost. Like I mentioned before, new cars are reliable but too expensive and old cars are cheap but unreliable. I needed something that was a perfect balance of reliability and cost.
Gov Auctions had a ton of cars listed for auction that all fit well within my price range. Almost all of the cars I saw were well below $5,000, and no car I saw listed closed at more than $8,000 even for a current-year model. That’s really cheap for a quality car!
Like I mentioned, I picked up a Camry that was 3 years old for only $5,000. I paid a little more for mine that most people did (based on auction records available on the site), but I live out in the middle of nowhere. I’m sure if I lived closer to a large city I’d find a similar car for even less.
The membership fee for the site was very reasonable especially since I saved so much on the car I purchased. The site only charges a one-time fee, not a rebilling membership, so I didn’t have to worry about unexpected bills showing up on my credit card statement. I got access to the site the moment I signed up, so I didn’t have to wait for my membership to clear before I used the service.
The membership allowed me to have access to over 10,000 government pre-owned vehicles for auction, 1,000s of live auctions with bids starting as low as $100, access to Google Maps to show me the exact location of auctions and even more features I won’t go into here. You should check it out yourself to see how much you get with a membership!
Overall, the pricing was very good all over the site. If you’re looking to save money on an almost new car, Gov Auctions is the site to check out!
The Final Verdict
Overall, I would highly recommend Gov Auctions. The site was very easy to navigate and helped an everyday guy like me find government auctions in my area. By purchasing a government pre-owned vehicle, I saved thousands of dollars on my family’s new car. I’ve tried to make this Gov Auctions review helpful and objective, but in all honesty, I loved the site.
