Fashion Design is one of those things I never really got. I definitely understand the appeal, of course. I mean, if you’re like me, you’ll occasionally get frustrated that you can’t find something while you’re clothes shopping and wish you could design your own dress or suit or what have you. But I never got how you could go from there to becoming a professional fashion designer and actually make money working in the fashion industry. Presumably there are a lot of steps between drawing pictures in your notebook and being a professional fashion designer, and I have no idea what those steps are.

Of course, this being the internet, there’s always someone who knows and is willing to teach for a price. Annette Corrie form Fashion Designing Course promises to teach how to get from here to there, what you need to do to become a fashion designer and how to design clothes online. It seems like a pretty tall order, but anything’s possible on the internet, and taking fashion designing courses online seems like a worthwhile time expenditure if fashion design is something that appeals to you. I’ve tried it on and modeled what’s included in the course; it will be up to you to decide if it’s fabulous or frumpy. I… I can’t make good fashion puns. I apologize.

What Do You Get With Fashion Designing Course?

Fashion Designing Course offers several downloadable fashion manuals.

  1. “How To Become A Professional Fashion Designer.” This fashion manual describes how to get started and what you need to do and be prepared for while you’re trying to get into the fashion industry.

  2. “How To Start Your Own Fashion Line.” A guide to naming, planning, marketing, and selling your own start up fashion line.

  3. “Fashion Illustration Templates.” A collection of fashion figure templates to aid in drawing designs professionally and consistently.

  4. “Fashion Blogging 101.” This guidebook focuses on getting started as a fashion blogger and making money off of your fashion blog once it’s up and running.

  5. “Creating Fashion Story Boards.” A guide to putting together a good looking fashion storyboard for your portfolio.

The Fabulous

There’s a whole lot of material here. While most every fashion designing courses focus entirely on the act of designing clothing itself, Fashion Designing Course branches out and offers material covering a lot of peripheral areas as well, specifically those noted in the section above. While it’s not all that difficult to find fashion designing institutes that offer online courses in fashion design, being able to get guides both to fashion design and to things like starting up a line and creating necessary story boards in the same place is pretty rare.

This attention to detail and preemptive inclusion of related materials that will likely come up once you have the basics suggests an unusually good grasp on what’s actually involved in getting into the fashion industry, and also shows confidence in the Fashion Design Course’s results, as extra help for intermediate designers wouldn’t be necessary for a course that didn’t actually help much. On the contrary, Fashion Designing Course seems to bank on its lessons working for its students.

The Frumpy

Well, the obvious problem with taking any fashion designing courses online is that the best fashion designing courses generally involve hands-on instruction. While fashion designing colleges are generally in person, that sort of thing simply isn’t possible in a digital format, and so taking fashion designing courses online is a little limited just by the medium.

If you don’t learn well from the written word or pictures, this might be pretty difficult for you, as the course is entirely contained in downloadable eBooks. This is not so much a weakness with Fashion Design Course in particular, though, so much as the medium. And, if you’ve read this far in my review and haven’t had any problems absorbing it, it probably won’t be much of a problem for you.

Does It Wear Well?

I’ve looked at a few other fashion design courses online, as well as courses in some somewhat related areas like interior designing courses. Fashion Design Course holds up remarkably well; its written materials are designed to be easily read but contain the information to make them worth reading, and the broadness of topics covered in the reading materials available trumps most every competitor of comparable price that I’ve sampled. The inclusion of the illustration templates and the guide to story boarding really push it over the top in terms of content per dollar spent. I would say that among its most direct competitors, Fashion Design Course is probably the best fashion designing course of its format.

But Is It “Me”?

Fashion Design Course seems to be intended for aspiring young fashion designers just starting out and hoping to crack into the fashion industry and become professional fashion designers. People who are already professional fashion designers do not seem to be the target audience, although I expect that the course still has something to offer designers who have been in the business for a while, particularly if they have trouble with story boards or are thinking about starting to blog about fashion for extra money on the side. Again, the breadth of the topics covered by the course is it’s strength, and expands the types of people who may benefit from it. The customers who would get the most value out of it, though, are the first timers.

The Verdict

If you’re a good reader, seriously interested in becoming a professional fashion designer, and do well with self-motivation, this course might be just the right fit for you. It definitely requires work on your part, as how much or how little you’ll get out of it will be entirely dependent on how much time you’re willing to spend reading the guide books and practicing with the materials provided, but it will definitely give you a leg up on the untrained. The written materials are solid and cover a wide range of related topics, and you get more for your money than with most fashion designing courses online. I’d say: try it on, see if it fits.
