I've been building and designing electronic devices all my life and I can tell you that I've only ever needed to use a fraction of the stuff that I learned for my degree. I don't regard my time at university wasted, quite the opposite in fact but I did learn a lot of interesting and fascinating stuff that I have never since needed to use. Most of the electronics that I have needed and used however is included in Greg's course.

 

What's in "Introduction To Electronics"?I should start out by telling you what isn't in this excellent basic electronics tutorial. There isn't any complicated mathematics for a start and don't worry because you don't need it. What you do get are the essentials that you need and will use when you are messing with electronics. No fluff here.

 

The sections on soldering and building circuits with solder are very simple. Soldering components together is demonstrated using tag strips. It's a tried and tested technique but it reminds me more of the 70's than it does of modern printed circuit boards. In contrast Greg shows you how to build the same circuits using modern solderless breadboards. The same solderless breadboards as used by hobbyists and professionals alike.

 

In nine short chapters Greg manages to give you all the information you are likely to need to understand the majority of projects that you might come across as a hobbyist. In fact when it comes down to it there is very little that I have ever needed in my career with regard to basic electronics that is not in this introduction.

 

Greg doesn't go into any depth about integrated circuits nor does he say much about digital electronics. You should however gain enough information to enable you to read a datasheet.

 

Datasheets are information packs describing individual components. Engineers refer to them every day to determine the characteristics of their circuits.

This is a pretty comprehensive glossary covering most of the basic terms that you are likely to come across. This is a useful resource.

 

Fun Electronic Projects

 

A collection of very basic electronic circuits that have been chosen for construction simplicity. I would have liked to have seen a little more instruction on how to build the circuits but they are interesting nevertheless.

 

Crystal Set

 

The description of how to build a crystal radio set is fascinating. Until you actually build one of these for yourself you won't believe how easy it can be to make a working radio receiver with so few components, most of which you can make for yourself. This project made me want to build it myself just as I had built a similar one fifty years ago.

 

Waves and Antennas

 

Some electronics engineers spend their days designing, building and refining antennas and waveguides and the like. It can be an immersive subject appealing to many designers. I am not one of them. The subject is far too mathematically biased for my liking and I would prefer to leave this work to other people.

 

Having said that, this is a good introduction to the subject with the minimal amount of theory and math. It will give you a useful grounding on the topic even if you never intend to make an antenna.

 

Ohms Law Secrets

 

If you think that electronics is so complicated and mind bending that you don't know where to start then you could do worse than by starting with this bonus. Read it first because it tells you most of what you need to know to start making sense of the subject. It does it in a no-fluff fashion that is very easy to digest.

 

Soldering Parts 1 & 2

 

This is perhaps the most disappointing of all the bonuses in the package. The information is very superficial and there are better tutorials around.

 

Conclusion

 

Whether you are a complete novice or you have been building electronics projects for some time, this guide will be of use to you. It isn't a degree course and it isn't filled with complicated math but it does give you everything that you need to know about basic electronics in an easy to understand and interesting way.
