If you’re having difficulty deciding whether to take the plunge and purchase a copy of Jamorama, then this review is for you. By reading this page, you’ll discover exactly what you get for your money when you buy Jamorama without any of the sales patter you’ll find on the Jamorama website.

But first, let me tell you a little about myself….

My name’s Danny Dutton and I bought Jamorama on Boxing Day 2011 after deciding quite spontaneously that I wanted to learn how to play guitar. The desire to learn guitar came after my eldest son, George, received an electric guitar for Christmas. Throughout Christmas Day and Boxing Day, I found that I was randomly picking it up and attempting to play it. Although my uncoordinated strumming could not be described as ‘music’, I very much enjoyed the feel of having a guitar on my lap.

So I made the decision there and then that I wanted to learn how to play it and began to look for an online guitar course aimed at complete beginners – I hadn’t any musical experience whatsoever and considered myself to be tone-deaf.

Based on a recommendation from a good friend of mine of mine and positive feedback from previous customers, I got myself a copy of Jamorama.

What do you get?

After purchase, you get a unique User ID and Password, which can be used to log on to the Jamorama Member’s Area, where you can download the entire guitar course.

There was a offer immediately after purchase to get a copy of Jamorama’s Lead Guitar Course for a one-time big discount but I chose not to buy it because I wasn’t sure how I’d get on with the Beginner’s Course – this is a decision that I am now beginning to regret and I may still go on to buy the Lead Course at a later date for the normal price of around $50.

So, I’m unable to comment on the additional Lead Guitar Course that is available, however with the basic package you have three books that you can download:

  • Beginner Course Level 1 Introduces you to the guitar, shows you how to hold it, how to strum in, how to pick notes, how to play Major chords and how to read music as tablature (guitar tabs) and traditional musical score (staves).

  • Beginner Course Level 2 Teaches you other chords including Minor, Major seventh, Barre (root 5 and root 6) and Power as well as going into detail about more advanced techniques.

  • Acoustic Focus Lessons Additional lessons to learn new styles and techniques and solidify everything that has been learned in previous lessons.

As well as the Jamorama PDF format books themselves (check out a breakdown of each of the lessons here), each of these three courses also comes with:

  • Video tutorials that back up the lessons by showing you how to do what has been described in the books.

  • Jam tracks that aid learning by allowing you play what you have learned along with the Jamorama Band (this is one of my favourite parts of the course).

In addition to the course materials, you can also download bonus software that you can use to improve your guitar and musical knowledge:

  • Tuning Guide – An e-book that explains four different methods that you can use to tune your guitar

  • Software and Games – Includes a guitar tuner (to help tune your guitar), a metronome (to help you keep in time), GuitEarit (too help you practice recognizing chords by ear) and Jayde Musica Pro (to help you recognize traditional musical notation).

  • The Chord Kit – A book of chord progressions used in different styles and the fun Chordinator game that helps you learn how chords are represented in traditional musical notation.

Is Jamorama a good beginner’s guitar course?

One of the things I liked about the course materials is that I felt that I was taking baby steps but at the same time learning a lot very quickly.

Each lesson introduces a few important concepts such as a new chord or a new note or a piece of musical theory and each explanation is supported with high resolution photographs and video tutorials.

Periodically, you’ll get to put everything you’ve learned into practice by joining in with a Jam session with the Jamorama band. The jam sessions are really awesome because you find yourself learning without realising it as you rock out with your own virtual band. The guitar has been purposely removed from the track so that you can fill the gap yourself.

When your fingers need a rest (and believe me, they will hurt for the first few weeks until they become used to the rigours of guitar playing) you can play the bonus games to improve your skills in sight-reading music and training your ear to recognise notes.

Within just a week of using Jamorama, I was able to play three chords and switch between them fairly easily as well as tune my guitar and read basic tab and traditional music score (click here to see what I learned in my first week).

After looking online for a song that I knew that used the chords I’d learned (A Major, D Major and E Major) I came across the tab for Leaving on a Jet Plane by John Denver and after a little practice I had learned the song from start finish. I considered this a major achievement and was really chuffed to be able to play a hit on my guitar so quickly. Here’s three other songs you can practise with using the A, D and E chords.

After two weeks, I’d learned the G chord and was able to play ‘Wild Thing‘ by The Troggs (although you can play it without the G chord).

So, in my opinion, Jamorama is a great course for beginners, particularly folk like myself who have no history in the realms of music.

But, not everything about a Jamorama is so great – see the bad points below.

The good points…

  • It is structured in such a way that you feel as though you are progressing rapidly but without suffering from information overload.

  • Every lesson is supported with other media including audio tracks, videos, games and high res photos.

  • As well as learning guitar, you will also gain a foundation in music theory.

  • The course will take you all the way from an absolute beginner to an advanced musician.

The bad points…

Videos and Jam Tracks are not interlinked with the Books – this means you have to search for the related support media on your computer rather than simply clicking a link within the book. Not a huge problem but it may be useful for Jamorama to have the course within the members area rather than as a download in future releases so that all the materials can be viewed from the same place.

You must have the self-motivation to practise – as with all online courses it is up to you to put in the time to practise and learn guitar. An online guitar course cannot give you a kick up the backside or an arm around the shoulder like a real-life guitar tutor can so if you lack self-discipline, Jamorama may not be for you.

To summarize…

On the whole, I found Jamorama to be a fantastic and comprehensive course for learning guitar. In a relatively short period of time I have gone from knowing nothing about music to being able to read it and play a plethora of songs on my guitar.

I’ve not gone through all the lessons yet but I have looked forward at the future lessons and can see that there is plenty to keep me ging for quite a while as I progress as a guitar player.

I’ve shown the course materials to friend of mine who is an accomplished guitarist (having toured Europe as part of a tribute band) and he told me that he’d wished he’d had Jamorama when he was starting out, so that is a ‘seal of approval’ for me.

So, I can heartily recommend Jamorama to anyone that wants to learn how to play the guitar online. Although it may not be a substitute for a dedicated guitar teacher, it does have the advantage of being a lot cheaper and if you’re not 100% satisfied with it you can always get your money back as they offer a 60 day money-back guaranteeIf you’ve found this Jamorama review useful and do decide you want a copy, just click the add to cart button.
