Before modern manufacturing, anyone who wished to own a boat had to build it from scratch. Today, a few artisan boat-builders continue the tradition on a professional level. Hobbyists also embrace boat building, albeit it more slowly and with significantly more trepidation. Martin Reid, author of “My Boat Plans,” nearly abandoned his love for building small boats when he decided to stop building model boats and try a full-sized model. He ran up against a difficulty with the plans designed for full-scale boats. He found the plans unbelievably frustrating. This early experience prompted his compilation of “My Boat Plans.”
“My Boat Plans” contains 31 years of collected boat plans, over 500 in total, and easy step-by-step explanations. The package contains over 40 how-to videos directly related to building boats by hand, targeted at beginning and mid-level users. “My Boat Plans” comes in a variety of formats, including downloads, DVDs and physical books.
Users are thrilled at the collection, but many do wish for more boat plans for their particular boat of choice. Catamarans and yachts seem to be under represented, both were mentioned particularly by reviewers. On the flip side, there are 518 boat plans included in the collection, so it would seem that there is something for everyone.
Users Love “My Boat Plans”
“Now let’s move into the 21st Century, if you want boat plans, there’s no better place to head for than My Boat Plans. Here, you can pick up 518 (yes, that’s five hundred eighteen) boat plans in electronic format for less than the price of one or two boat plans just a few years ago. And, because they are on your pc, once you’ve downloaded them, you can print out as many boat plans, parts of plans and details as you want. That means you can take them into the workshop, tread on them, even lose them altogether and you’ll be fine. Another copy is just a click away. You might not think this is important but, believe me, you will once you get started.” (John Gordon - Lyndhurst, NJ)
“Martin Reid, the creator of my boat plans offers an efficient and user friendly system for the construction of boats of any kind in a simple easy to follow way…. MyBoatPlans is a great collection anyway you look at it. It is suitablefor beginners as well as seasoned builders alike. It offer great value for money considering the one-time price you pay for such an extensive system.” (David Smith - Cambridge, MA)
“Visiting this site can save from all the hassle with its clear, concise boat plans laid out in an easy, step-by-step format. You need not be a master boat builder to be able to put these instructions to use for you. In fact, these plans are so simple, you can start building a boat today, even if you have no experience!” (Charles Asmus - Outer Banks, NC)
Conclusion
If you want to build a boat and you have some experience with woodworking, download this book now. Although Reid claims that anyone can build a boat using his package, reviewers have mentioned that there is some level of skill required. Even 10 hours of instructional videos cannot inject confidence and skill into every person. However, this is the only far-fetched claim that Reid makes as regards his package.
The sheer size of “My Boat Plans” is a double-edged sword. It contains so much information (plenty to get many people through their first boat-building project and improve the experience of more advanced builders) that the download sometimes chokes and can be difficult for some buyers to complete. Reid solved this problem by offering a DVD and physical book version of “My Boat Plans.”
All things considered, this is an excellent book for people wishing to learn how to build a boat. You shouldn’t expect to be able to build a boat the first day you have the package, though, since the tutorials should be watched before you even begin to choose your boat’s design. However, when you’ve finished with all the educational information contained herein, you will be fully armed to have an excellent experience building your first boat.
