I must say that I was a little skeptical about this at first. Talking to Toddlers is a program designed to help you deal with children of all ages (and even adults), without the fighting and resistance that you would normally encounter when trying to get your children to do something they don’t want to do (like go to bed on time!).
I wanted so hard to be able to talk to my children without all the fighting. After I listened to the first few lessons and started trying the tricks on not only my children, but also on my husband, I can honestly say that it helped for us. I still have some reservations about exactly how to do some of the steps, but after rewording and getting a little more practice, it is becoming easier.
I love the fact that it comes in a few different forms. I had the experience of reading it as well as an MP3 player version. I would take it on my phone and sit outside with the kids and listen to the lesson, then I would try it out on them. At the end of the day I had a copy of the written lesson and was able to go back over and read it again.
The concept Chris, the author, has is smart. I was taught new tricks and techniques to get my children to cooperate. Now it does not happen over night, in fact I have been at it for over week. I will say that I do have some problems here and there, but I just kept rewording my phrases until my kids all began to cooperate.
Talking to Toddlers allows children to finally accept the word “no” without all the tantrums that would usually go on. It gives them a better attitude about things and allows them to look at the positive outcome.
The only thing that do not like about it was that he only addresses the concept of the tantrums. There was no way for the parent and the child to connect better in terms of respecting one another. However, having a well behaved and socially acceptable child in public is a major plus to this, and I believe with time the respect will come.
Overall my impression of Talking to Toddlers is this: I believe that it is effective. If you are even skeptical about it, just listen to or read the first few lessons and just try them out. Chris even offers a free lesson on his website just for you to try out! I have four children and used the technique with all of them. You have to learn what works and what doesn’t and do not give up. It helped us, it could really help you too!
