A few weeks ago I obtained a copy of Total Surfing Fitness and have had the opportunity to put it into practice. I was feeling like I was in a rut with my workout and I wanted to shake things up a bit. This course definitely did the trick.

There are very specific workouts here, so you aren't left guessing which exercises to mix and match. There are several routines depending on your overall fitness, I found the level 1 workout to be a good place to start, but there are several more to progress to over time. The instructions are clear with full color photos to explain each exercise. The only equipment required is a set of dumbells, an exercise (stability) ball, and a pull-up bar.

It's a great workout without leaving you totally burnt out. The focus here is on “functional training”. That is, exercise that targets several muscle groups at the same time, the way we surf, instead of isolating a muscle group as many machines/bodybuilders do. Just the style I was looking for. Many other routines I have tried left me feeling way to stiff to actually surf well, so the end result of that work and sweat was counterproductive.

There are specific instructions for cardio workouts (these subsitute for surfing when you can't do that) as well as the strength workouts. The benefits showed up where I wanted it most....my surfing.

My paddle improved significantly. Not just the endurace, for the those heavy current days at Ocean Beach, but also the power of my stroke. I also felt a dramatic increase in the power up my legs. Regular surfing, paddling around and waiting for sets, tends to leave the legs a bit neglected. Total Surfing Fitness gave my legs a nice boost.

The course also comes with several bonus ebooks. One includes some interesting information on nutrition, very good info on different fats and their effect on health....you may be surprised by some of the things you read here. There's also a mini ebook showing a quick powerful outdoor workout. Also included is a quick surfer fitness test measuring your balance, upper body strength, and core. To improve your weak areas there are some simple exercises to implement immediately. Just in case that is not enough, there's also an additional ebook for the “turbulence training” workout. This is another powerful routine for fitness with full color photos and clear explanations for all the exercises.

So whether your feeling a little out of shape or if you just want to improve your present physical state, Total Surfing Fitness will do the trick. The bottom line here is it will increase your wave count.
